About this place

Rapa Nui’s only town—harbour life, cafés, crafts, and the logistics hub for every adventure.

Hanga Roa squeezes most of the island’s hotels, schools, clinics, and government offices into a walkable strip along the west coast. Early mornings smell of diesel and fresh bread as fishing boats unload; evenings bring street music near Pea and craft stalls along Tu’u ma Heva. Use the town as a staging area: ATMs, rental bikes, SIM cards, and bilingual guides cluster within a few blocks—just remember many businesses observe a relaxed island pace.

Local etiquette

Greet shopkeepers with a simple “iorana” and ask permission before photographing residents in ceremonial dress. Sunday mornings quiet down for church services—plan noisy errands for weekdays.

Traveler tips

  • Tap water is generally potable but bottled water is widely available if you prefer.
  • Respect siesta hours—some shops close mid-afternoon.
  • Download offline maps; island bandwidth fluctuates.
